Jesus' message to the world was entirely counterintuitive: "Turn the other cheek" (Matt. 5:39), and "Love your enemy" (Matt. 5:34, Luke 6:27), and it established Christianity as a religion of non-violence and passive resistance to evil. Yet the Church teaches that while war, in general, should be avoided, it is sometimes entirely justified (CCC 2308-09).
This presentation will explore the concept of a 'just war.' This time, our approach is somewhat different: instead of a single speaker, we will have a panel of three:
-- Col. Joe Sutter, USAF retired, distinguished graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and Sacred Heart Parishioner,
-- Lt Col. Nolan Sharbel USMCR retired, military attorney and All Saints Parishioner, and
-- Capt. Tom Baer USNR retired, graduate of the Naval War College and All Saints Parishioner.
The panel discusses Just War beginning with St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, the UN Charter, and The Catechism of the Catholic Church.
